The 14-Day Loose-Leash Reset

A two-week plan that replaces pulling with a default position beside your knee, using rate of reinforcement rather than corrections.
Training Guides

The 14-Day Loose-Leash Reset Stop pulling by building a default position at your knee—no corrections required.

Week 1: Build the “Sweet Spot”

  • Days 1–3 (Indoors): Ditch the leash. Stand still and feed high-value treats directly at your knee every time your dog aligns beside you.
  • Days 4–7 (Driveway/Yard): Clip the leash on. Take 1 step. If the leash stays slack, deliver 3 rapid-fire treats at your hip. Focus on reward frequency over distance.

Week 2: Take It on the Road

  • Days 8–10 (The “Beep-Beep” Reverse): On walks, the second tension hits the leash, back up 3 steps. As soon as your dog turns back into your side, reward heavily.
  • Days 11–14 (Speed & Direction Shifts): Change your pace randomly. Treat your dog every time they match your speed to stay by your knee.

Golden Rules

  • Reward high: Feed treat after treat while they are in position—don’t wait for them to fail.
  • Zero leash pops: Let the high rate of reinforcement do the teaching, not physical pressure. Keep sessions under 5 minutes!
