Growth Plates and Safe Exercise

How far can a five-month-old walk? Stairs, jumping and the evidence behind the five-minutes-per-month guideline.
Training Guides

German Shepherd puppies grow quickly, but their bones and joints are still developing. The goal during puppyhood is not to avoid exercise altogether—it is to provide age-appropriate movement without excessive repetitive impact.

How Far Can a Five-Month-Old Walk?

There is no scientifically established distance that is safe for every five-month-old puppy. Fitness, individual development, terrain, and the puppy’s condition all matter.

The popular “five minutes per month of age” rule is often used as a simple guideline, but it is not a firmly evidence-based limit. Instead, think in terms of short, controlled activity with plenty of opportunities to rest.

A five-month-old German Shepherd may benefit from several shorter walks rather than one long, demanding outing. Let the puppy explore and sniff at their own pace.

What About Stairs?

Occasional, controlled stair use is generally different from repeatedly running up and down stairs. Avoid encouraging a young puppy to race on stairs or navigate slippery surfaces.

Use gates where necessary and provide good footing.

Jumping and High-Impact Exercise

Repeated jumping, hard landings, forced running, and sharp changes of direction place greater stress on developing joints. Avoid activities such as repetitive ball throwing that encourage constant sprinting and jumping.

Instead, focus on free play, sniffing, gentle walking, basic training, and controlled exploration.

Let the Puppy Set the Pace

Watch for signs of fatigue such as lagging behind, lying down, excessive panting, or changes in movement. Stop and allow the puppy to rest rather than pushing through tiredness.

For a growing German Shepherd, the goal is to build confidence, coordination, and healthy movement—not maximum endurance.

Moderate, varied activity with plenty of recovery is a better approach than following an arbitrary exercise quota.
